Turkey Hunting Ammunition:
Heavy loads of lead shot shot through tight chokes has always been the "default" for turkey hunters. Recent advances in non-toxic shot has resulted in shotshells whose payloads are "heavier-than-lead." The "heavier-than-lead" shells cost considerably more than lead, so lead is by no means obsolete. But how many shots at turkeys does an average turkey hunter take?
Remember that if you choose a "heavier-than-lead" alternative like Hevi-Shot or Winchester Xtended Range shotshells, you should match up the load to your choke tube.
Tip: Since Hevi-Shot and other "heavier-than-lead" shotshells tend to pattern very tightly compared to lead loads, consider bringing along a couple rounds of traditional lead turkey loads for situations where you find that you are setting up in relatively dense cover caling for short shooting distances. (especially in late spring seasons)
