Turkey Hunting Ammunition:

Heavy loads of lead shot shot through tight chokes has always been the "default" for turkey hunters. Recent advances in non-toxic shot has resulted in shotshells whose payloads are "heavier-than-lead." The "heavier-than-lead" shells cost considerably more than lead, so lead is by no means obsolete. But how many shots at turkeys does an average turkey hunter take?

Remember that if you choose a "heavier-than-lead" alternative like Hevi-Shot or Winchester Xtended Range shotshells, you should match up the load to your choke tube.

Tip: Since Hevi-Shot and other "heavier-than-lead" shotshells tend to pattern very tightly compared to lead loads, consider bringing along a couple rounds of traditional lead turkey loads for situations where you find that you are setting up in relatively dense cover caling for short shooting distances. (especially in late spring seasons)

Hevi-Shot Hevi-13? Turkey Loads

Hevi-Shot Hevi-13 Turkey Loads

HEVI-Shot Hevi-13 Turkey Loads feature lighter density pellets, more consistent gunpowder, and superior buffering for the tightest pattern possible and the most knockdown power. Water-resistant crimp; velocity: 1090 feet per second.

Kent Cartridge Ultimate Diamond Shot Turkey Shotshells

Kent Cartridge Ultimate Diamond Shot Turkey Shotshells

Super hard, high-antimony, finely polished shot makes the difference! Traditional lead load with less feather draw and better penetration for more birds in the bag. 10 rounds per box.

Winchester Xtended? Range Turkey Loads Shotshells

Winchester Xtended Range Turkey Loads Shotshells

Want a high-speed, high-impact load that maintains a tight center pattern at ranges further than you are typically comfortable taking a shot? In 2005, Winchester raised the bar in turkey load performance with the introduction of the Xtended Range line. The tungsten-based shot is 10% more dense than lead and delivers superior downrange performance in terms of core pattern grouping and pellet energy. Consistently round and uniformly smooth shot makes for far fewer flyers from your patterns and results in more pellets being delivered on target. Thousands of gobblers were taken with these loads all over the country during the 2005 spring season. The key to Winchester Xtended Range Hi-Density superior ballistics is the consistent shape, size, weight, and pellet count per ounce of shot. Hi-Density shot consistently provides a high level of performance through tighter patterns and unsurpassed knockdown power. Muzzle velocity of 1225 fps. 10 rounds per box.

What's new this month...!

Spring 2010 turkey seasons will be starting soon in many Southern states, and then opening up quickly throughout the North. Of course, all hunters can still prepare for their Spring seasons by purchasing whatever gear and supplies they wished that they had already owned while hunting last season. Savvy turkey hunters should find the time now to buy the needed supplies for "do it yourself" taxidermy projects with the tail feathers, beards, and spurs of their upcoming trophies. And there will still be some Fall turkey hunting opportunities later in the year...............
